L'Éloquence du quotidien, Gabor Szilasi (French Version)
It is impossible to contemplate the last half-century of Canadian photography without repeatedly invoking both the presence and the work of Gabor Szilasi. In addition to his considerable influence as a teacher, as supportive colleague and friend, and as a participant in the vibrant artistic life of Montreal, he has produced one of Canada’s pre-eminent bodies of photographic work. Over the course of more than fifty years, he has created remarkable images of Quebec and Europe—townscapes and cityscapes, views of domestic and commercial architecture, and environmental portraits, a genre in which the setting plays a prominent role. The cultural and historical value of the work rests not only in the eloquence of the individual images and the cohesiveness of the different series of photographs, but also, and more importantly, in the cumulative record they provide. Initially, these images described with both perspicacity and candour the particularities of an era, but now, considered in their entirety, have come to visually embody it.
