Gabor Szilasi: The Art World in Montreal, 1960-1980
GABOR SZILASI has received the title of Compagnon des arts et des lettres du Québec (June 9, 2021) by the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ) is pleased to announce the 18 new members of the Ordre des arts et des lettres du Québec. This prestigious honour awarded by the CALQ pays tribute to artists, writers, managers, and patrons in the cultural milieu for their outstanding contribution to the development and reputation of excellence of Québec arts and literature, at home and abroad.
Gabor Szilasi is one of Quebec’s best-known living photographers. Shortly after settling in Montreal in 1959, Szilasi began photographing the numerous art openings that he frequently attended with his wife, artist Doreen Lindsay. Over the next two decades, he produced a considerable record of photographs, comprised of Montreal’s visual arts community. A number of whom would shape the history of art in Canada.
Expanding on his 2017 solo exhibition at the McCord Museum, the book features three essays, an interview and over one hundred images. Through his photographs, Szilasi manages to capture with candour, perspicacity and with some of the revolutionary changes that affected Montreal’s art world throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Szilasi impressive body of work totalling approximately 3, 600 negatives provides a rare look at the social lives of Canadian artists during a time effervescence and creative possibility. Gabor Szilasi: The Art World in Montreal invites reflection on what has since been lost and gained.
